Kim Jong-un Prioritizes Strengthening North Korea-China Relations During Summit with Xi Jinping

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un emphasized that enhancing ties with China is North Korea's foremost policy priority during summit discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Pyongyang.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the talks between Kim and Xi occurred shortly after Xi's arrival in Pyongyang for his first state visit in nearly seven years. Kim expressed that fostering the friendship between North Korea and China aligns with "the people's choice and the calling of the times," as quoted by China's Xinhua News Agency. He highlighted that developing mutual ties is North Korea's "most important strategic priority."

Amidst what he described as the international community undergoing "unprecedented, grand change," Kim reaffirmed North Korea's support for Beijing's "One China" principle and pledged to assist in safeguarding China's core interests. He also committed to making their relationship an exemplary model for international relations, stating that both nations should jointly contribute to regional and global peace and prosperity.

During the summit, Xi emphasized China's unwavering commitment to protecting North Korea's interests and expanding cooperation across various sectors, including the economy, trade, military, science, and healthcare. He asserted that regardless of changes in the international situation, China's dedication to safeguarding the shared interests of both countries and maintaining a favorable strategic environment would remain unchanged.

Xi further stated that the two countries should maintain high-level exchanges to guide their relationship, building on the foundation of political mutual trust. He called for enhanced coordination in diplomacy, law enforcement, and military affairs, urging the two nations to stand firm in defending each other's sovereignty, security, and development interests. Xi expressed China's readiness to work with Kim in charting the course of bilateral relations from a strategic perspective, aiming for greater development in their relationship.
