Kim Jong-un Emphasizes Naval Expansion with Visit to North Korea’s First 5,000-Ton Destroyer

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has inspected the nation's inaugural 5,000-ton destroyer, underscoring the need to bolster naval combat capabilities in order to effectively deter and counter perceived enemy provocations, as reported by state media on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim's visit to the Choe Hyon destroyer took place on Sunday, accompanied by key party and government officials, as part of his agenda during a military hardware exhibition. North Korea introduced the 5,000-ton multipurpose destroyer, named Choe Hyon, in April, marking a significant step in its efforts to enhance naval capabilities.

During his visit, Kim stated that "the tremendous ability of our navy should be exercised in the vast ocean to thoroughly deter or counter and punish the enemy's provocations" to protect the nation's sovereignty and security interests, as per the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). He further emphasized that the Workers' Party would persist in its efforts for the rapid expansion and growth of the naval combat force, which is seen as crucial for defending national rights.

North Korea has previously announced that the Choe Hyon destroyer is equipped with advanced weaponry, including supersonic strategic cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles. In June, the country launched another destroyer of the same class, the Kang Kon, following repairs necessitated by damage sustained during its initial launch attempt in May.

The focus on naval strength continues with North Korea's plans to construct another 5,000-ton destroyer by October 2026, highlighting the country's ongoing commitment to expanding its maritime military capabilities.
