Milan: Short track speed skater Kim Gil-li, at her first Olympics, clinched a bronze medal in the women's 1,000 meters, marking her debut on the Olympic podium. Despite a challenging path to this achievement, her performance at Milano Ice Skating Arena was a testament to her resilience and determination.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim, aged 21, has faced a series of hurdles during her Olympic journey. Prior to the 2025-26 season, she received an Olympic rings necklace from her parents, which she unfortunately lost during the International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Tour events in Montreal. Unfazed by the loss, she quickly replaced it, humorously suggesting it might be a sign of winning double gold at the Olympics.

Though she didn't win gold, Kim's bronze finish came after overcoming a fall in the mixed team relay semifinals and a collision in the 1,000m semifinals. In the latter event, she was pushed by Belgium's Hanne Desmet, leading to a crash into the padded wall. Desmet was subsequently penalized, allowing Kim to advance to the final.

Reflecting on the bronze win, Kim expressed her newfound motivation, saying, "This thing is heavier than I thought it was going to be. Now that I've won this, I am really motivated to reach an even higher place on the podium."

Kim noted the intensity of the competition, observing that her rivals had reached peak form for the Olympics. Despite the challenges, she maintained her focus and determination, saying, "I tried to keep trusting myself. This event comes around once every four years, and I don't know if I will have another chance."

With the women's 3,000m relay and 1,500m events still ahead, Kim is optimistic. "This 1,000m race was such a big confidence boost for me," she remarked, looking forward to the upcoming competitions.
