Goyang: Judges nationwide gathered on Monday to deliberate on the Democratic Party's (DP) judicial reform initiatives, which have raised alarm among top judicial officials due to potential constitutional conflicts. The meeting, held at the Judicial Research and Training Institute in Goyang, comes in the wake of apprehensions expressed by leading judges last Friday regarding the DP's legislative proposals.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the reform bills aim to establish a special tribunal specifically for insurrection cases linked to last year's brief martial law imposition and to introduce a new offense termed "legal distortion." Judge Kim Ye-young, presiding over the meeting from the Seoul Southern District Court, emphasized the importance of the discussions in rebuilding public confidence in the judiciary. Kim stated, "Many important bills related to the judicial system are under discussion at the National Assembly and will have a very big impact on the public. (I) hope today's discussions will contribute to recovering trust in the judiciary and improving the judicial system."

The meeting's agenda includes deliberations on the necessity for judicial involvement in reform efforts and potential enhancements to the Supreme Court justice candidate nomination process. Additionally, the judges will address concerns about revising the evaluation system for judges and will review the National Court Administration's perspective on the Democratic Party's reform push, including the controversial bills.
