Seoul: Han Seong-sook, currently serving as the minister of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), has been selected to become South Korea's new prime minister. Han, a notable leader in the information technology sector, is recognized for her significant impact on the country's internet portal industry through her leadership at Naver Corp.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han, 59, started her professional journey as a reporter at a local computer journal after completing her studies at Sookmyung Women's University in 1989. She later became a founding member of Empas, a local web search engine and web portal, in 1997. Her career progressed significantly when she joined NHN, the forerunner of Naver, in 2007. There, she was instrumental in transforming the company into South Korea's leading internet platform.
In 2017, Han broke new ground as the first female chief executive officer (CEO) of Naver. Her leadership skills and influence were recognized globally, earning her a spot on Fortune Magazine's list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in the World from 2017 to 2020. After stepping down as CEO, Han continued to contribute to Naver's growth by leading its European operations and later served as a company adviser.
During her tenure at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Han spearheaded initiatives like "Startup for All," which focused on fostering youth entrepreneurship. She also played a crucial role in enhancing support programs for small businesses and self-employed workers. If confirmed by the National Assembly, Han will become the first female prime minister in Lee Jae Myung's government and the second female prime minister in South Korea's history since Han Myeong-sook, who held the position from 2006 to 2007.
