Seoul: The defense ministry announced an internal inspection into the Korea War Memorial Organization's inclusion of a Chinese facility promoting propaganda about the Korean War in an educational program for teachers. The facility, located in Dandong, China, was part of an overseas training itinerary focusing on historical sites related to anti-Japanese movements during Japan's colonial rule of Korea from 1910 to 1945.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the War Memorial of Korea's operator faced criticism for including the Dandong memorial hall, which presents China's involvement in the Korean War as support for North Korea against U.S.-led Allied forces. The itinerary's controversial nature prompted an investigation to determine its appropriateness. Chung Binna, a ministry spokesperson, emphasized the ministry's view of the inclusion as a major oversight and promised a thorough audit to uncover the truth, with strict measures to follow.
Facing backlash over a promotional poster that aligned the Chinese narrative of the Korean War with South Korea's perspective, the Korea War Memorial Organization has since removed the Dandong memorial hall from the itinerary. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back has called for a comprehensive investigation and mandated that any necessary actions align with relevant regulations.
