Seoul: Former South Korean baseball MVP Kim Do-yeong has been discharged from a local hospital after undergoing surgery to repair a broken nose, with aspirations of staying on the national team for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan. According to Yonhap News Agency, the Kia Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) confirmed Kim's release from the hospital, located in Gwangju, a day after his surgery. Kim sustained the injury during a KBO game on Wednesday when a bunt attempt resulted in the ball hitting his face. The Tigers have described the injury as non-serious and have not placed Kim on the injured list. The national team staff remains hopeful that Kim will be fit to compete in the Asian Games. Opting for caution, Kim will not accompany the Tigers to their road game against the KT Wiz in Suwon on Saturday. Instead, he will stay in Gwangju to train independently. The team has indicated that Kim will rejoin them in Gwangju on Sunday, where his participation will be determined just before the game. Kim, who earned the 2024 league MVP title, is currently a strong contender for this year's MVP award, leading the KBO with 40 home runs and 105 runs scored. He is also among the leaders in walks, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. Following a challenging 2025 season where he was limited to 30 games due to multiple hamstring injuries, Kim had played all 122 games for the Tigers this year until his recent injury. KBO star players, including Kim, are expected to report to the national team's training camp on Monday before departing for Japan next Friday. South Korea's first game is slated for September 21 against Chinese Taipei as they aim for their fifth consecutive gold medal.
