Washington: Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan announced Wednesday that he intends to meet with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to discuss President Donald Trump's recent declaration to raise tariffs on South Korea. This meeting is set to address Trump's intention to increase "reciprocal" tariffs and other levies, which could see duties on South Korean goods like automobiles, lumber, and pharmaceuticals rise from 15 percent to 25 percent.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim made these comments shortly after arriving at an airport near Washington, D.C. The urgency of the meeting stems from Trump's dissatisfaction with the pace of South Korea's legislative processes supporting the trade deal between the two nations. Trump has cited these delays as a primary reason for his tariff threats.

Kim stated his intention to clarify the situation to Secretary Lutnick, emphasizing that the South Korean government is committed to maintaining its cooperation and investment relationship with the United States. He aims to prevent any misunderstandings by providing a comprehensive explanation of the legislative procedures in South Korea, ensuring that the U.S. administration is fully informed of their progress and intentions.
