Seoul: Industry Minister nominee Kim Jung-kwan emphasized his commitment to prioritizing South Korea's national interests during tariff negotiations with the United States and to bolstering Korean exports in the face of global trade uncertainties.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim expressed his desire to lead South Korea's export efforts and assist the nation in transforming current challenges into opportunities. He shared these sentiments while preparing for his parliamentary confirmation hearing, indicating his proactive approach to addressing trade concerns.

Regarding the impending trade discussions with the U.S. under the Trump administration, Kim stated his intent to collaborate closely with Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo to establish a tariff agreement that aligns with South Korea's national interests. He acknowledged the challenges faced by Korean companies in the competitive global market.

Prior to his nomination, Kim served as a marketing president at Doosan Enerbility Co., a prominent Korean power equipment manufacturer. Under his leadership, the company successfully enhanced its global presence, notably securing the Dukovany nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic.

Kim also touched upon President-elect Lee Jae Myung's campaign promise to form a new ministry dedicated to climate and energy policies, highlighting the intertwined nature of industry and energy. He emphasized the importance of ensuring a coordinated approach among the industry, trade, and energy sectors, especially in the era of artificial intelligence.

During his campaign, Lee pledged to integrate energy policy responsibilities from the industry ministry with environmental policy duties from the environment ministry to better address climate change challenges.
