Seoul: The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment announced their collaboration on Friday through the signing of an agreement aimed at boosting the battery recycling industry. This initiative marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable practices within the battery sector.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the newly formed alliance between the two ministries focuses on creating a comprehensive platform to manage battery trade and its lifecycle. The collaboration will also integrate certification systems for recycled materials, refine necessary regulations, and engage in joint research and development projects. These efforts are designed to rapidly and efficiently implement the policies set forth by the agreement.

A working-level consultative body will be established by the ministries to ensure the effective execution of the proposed initiatives. This body will play a crucial role in navigating the complexities associated with the battery recycling process.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are prevalent in smartphones, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems, contain essential minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. The government underscores the importance of forming a sustainable battery lifecycle, emphasizing that it is vital for positioning the battery industry as a significant growth sector in the future.
