Independence Hall Board Schedules Meeting to Address Motion for Chief’s Dismissal

Seoul: The Independence Hall of Korea is anticipated to convene a board meeting next week to deliberate and potentially approve a motion demanding the dismissal of its chief, Kim Hyoung-suk, amidst allegations of corruption and other misconduct.

According to Yonhap News Agency, a special audit conducted by the veterans ministry revealed that Kim, who serves as the director of the history museum, allegedly exploited the facility for personal use and engaged in various irregularities. These findings were presented by Rep. Kim Yong-man of the ruling Democratic Party (DP), one of six board members calling for the meeting to discuss Kim's potential removal. The museum's board of directors is comprised of 15 members in total.

Should the motion for dismissal be approved, the veterans minister would then forward a request for Kim's removal to President Lee Jae Myung. The audit reported 14 instances of misconduct by Kim, including unauthorized rent-free leasing of assets and improper solicitation of donations. Despite filing an appeal against the audit's conclusions, Kim's request was rejected by the veterans ministry.

The Democratic Party has urged Kim to resign, highlighting his appointment by former President Yoon Suk Yeol and labeling him as a conservative New Right scholar with a controversial perspective on history.
