Illegal Fishing by Foreign Vessels to Face Tougher Punishment in South Korea

Seoul:<Text>

Illegal fishing by foreign vessels in South Korean waters will face tougher punishment under revised laws, the maritime ministry said Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has announced an increase in the cap on fines for unlicensed vessels operating in the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The fines will now be raised to 1.5 billion won (US$1 million) from the previous 0.3 billion won. This significant increase aims to deter illegal activities within South Korea's maritime boundaries.

The decision comes after President Lee Jae Myung instructed maritime police to take firm actions against illegal fishing by Chinese vessels in the South Korean EEZ. This area, particularly in the Yellow Sea, has seen numerous incidents of illegal fishing by foreign vessels, prompting the need for stricter enforcement measures.

President Lee has emphasized the importance of protecting South Korea's f isheries and maintaining the sovereignty of its waters. The directive to the Korea Coast Guard is part of a broader strategy to tackle the issue of illegal fishing and to safeguard the livelihoods of local fishermen who rely on these waters for their income.
