Hyundai Rotem Co. announced on Thursday that it has secured a 491 billion-won (US$332 million) contract to supply driverless electric multiple units (EMUs) for a metro project in Vietnam. The rail systems manufacturer, part of Hyundai Motor Group, is set to provide these unmanned trains for Ho Chi Minh City's Metro Line No. 2, which is expected to start operations in 2030.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hyundai Rotem has also entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Vietnam's Thaco Group to supply signaling systems for the 64-kilometer metro line. The company believes that this deal will enhance its market presence in Vietnam and aid in securing further contracts, including those for planned high-speed rail projects connecting the northern and southern regions of the country.

Hyundai Rotem estimates that Vietnam's high-speed rail initiative could be valued at approximately 100 trillion won, highlighting the significant potential fo r future engagements in the country's rapidly developing rail infrastructure.
