Busan: Swimmer Hwang Sun-woo set a new Asian record in the men's 200-meter freestyle at a national competition. Hwang clocked in at 1:43.92 to win the gold at the National Sports Festival held at Sajik Indoor Swimming Pool in the southeastern city of Busan. This performance eclipsed his previous personal best and the South Korean national record of 1:44.40, which he set earlier in 2023.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hwang also surpassed the Asian record of 1:44.39, set by Chinese Olympic medalist Sun Yang. In the same race, Lee Ho-joon secured second place with a time of 1:47.72. This victory marks Hwang's fourth consecutive 200m freestyle title at the National Sports Festival, solidifying his reputation as one of South Korea's most accomplished swimmers. Hwang has previously won multiple medals at the world championships, including a first-place finish in the 200m freestyle at the 2024 worlds.

"This is one of the happiest moments of my life," Hwang stated during a press conference. He expressed his determination throughout his career to break the 1:44 barrier in the 200m freestyle, a goal he has now achieved. His emotional reaction after the race and on the podium was a rare display for the usually composed 22-year-old athlete.

Reflecting on his journey, Hwang remarked, "Today, memories of all the hard times came flooding back, and tears just kept flowing." Despite a challenging recent past, including missing the podium at this year's World Championships and the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, Hwang's achievement at the National Sports Festival represents a significant personal and professional milestone.
