Seoul: Several significant events in Korean history occurred on this day, showcasing a timeline of pivotal moments that have shaped the nation. These events span from strategic relocations during invasions to advancements in broadcast media and diplomatic gestures.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in 1232, Korea's Goryeo Dynasty strategically relocated its capital from the ancient city of Kaesong to Ganghwa Island off the west coast. This move was in response to the impending threat posed by a Mongolian invasion. Centuries later, in 1956, South Korea witnessed a breakthrough in media with the launch of its first television network, HLKZ-TV, marking a new era in broadcasting.
In 1981, the South Korean government made a landmark decision allowing its citizens the freedom to travel overseas. This policy shift broadened horizons for many South Koreans, fostering increased global interaction and cultural exchange.
Another notable event took place in 1998 when Hyundai Group's honorary Chairman, Chung Ju-yung, visited North Korea. He famously brought with him 500 head of cattle as a donation. This visit marked the first time a South Korean civilian was permitted to enter North Korea via the truce village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone. Chung, a pivotal figure in South Korea's economic landscape, passed away in March 2001 at the age of 86.
In 2004, both North and South Korea took steps towards reducing propaganda efforts by dismantling loudspeakers and signboards, indicative of a brief period of eased tensions. However, in 2016, tensions were highlighted again when an appeals court sentenced Kim Ki-jong to a 12-year prison term for the assault on U.S. envoy Mark Lippert, an incident that occurred in 2015. Kim's actions had resulted in deep injuries to Lippert, and the sentence was later confirmed by the Supreme Court.
More recently, in 2020, North Korea escalated tensions by demolishing the inter-Korean joint liaison office in Kaesong. This act intensified the strain on the Korean Peninsula, following a series of threats directed at Seoul over the distribution of anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets.
