Seoul: HD Hyundai Infracore Co. announced it has secured a substantial contract valued at 92.3 billion won (US$67.6 million) from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to provide engines for South Korea's K2 battle tanks. The agreement outlines phased deliveries of the 1,500-horsepower engines, which will continue through 2028.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the engine model offered by HD Hyundai Infracore is on par with those used in main battle tanks by leading global military forces. This enables the robust 56-ton K2 tank to achieve a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour. The engine's advanced turbocharging system enhances power and combustion efficiency, while its design features help reduce vibration and ensure uniform power distribution.
HD Hyundai Infracore successfully localized the production of the K2 tank engine in 2014. Since 2019, it has been the exclusive supplier of these engines to DAPA. Additionally, DAPA recently announced a significant second sales agreement for K2 tanks with Poland, valued at approximately 8.8 trillion won.
Kim Joong-soo, head of the engine business division at HD Hyundai Infracore, commented on the contract's significance, stating, "The contract demonstrates HD Hyundai's defense technology capabilities and reliability. We will continue to strengthen South Korea's defense competitiveness by building a stable supply chain and investing in technological innovation."
