HD Hyundai Heavy Secures $350 Million Icebreaker Contract from Sweden

Seoul: HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, South Korea's top shipbuilder, has announced a significant victory in securing a $350 million contract to construct an icebreaker for the Swedish Maritime Administration. The vessel is slated for delivery in 2029 and will play a crucial role in icebreaking, fleet operations, and ice management activities in the Baltic Sea, according to the company's press release.

According to Yonhap News Agency, HD Hyundai Heavy outperformed competitors from Finland and Norway to win this contract. This agreement represents a milestone as it is the first time a dedicated icebreaker has been exported by a South Korean shipbuilder. The company has highlighted the rising global demand for icebreakers, a need underscored by the United States' recent move to increase related funding to $9 billion.

Furthermore, the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact) - a trilateral initiative involving the United States, Canada, and Finland - is focused on enhancing Arctic capabilities through joint construction and technology sharing. A spokesperson for HD Hyundai Heavy stated, "We aim to expand into naval and special-purpose vessel markets, where icebreaking capabilities are increasingly required."
