Daegu:Once at risk of being cut, first baseman Harold Castro has proven to be a crucial asset for the Kia Tigers in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason. Castro delivered an impressive performance in Monday night's game at Daegu Samsung Lions Park, leading the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Samsung Lions in Game 1 of the second round.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Castro went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored, showcasing his offensive prowess as the cleanup hitter. This season, Castro's journey with the Tigers has been notable. After joining the team, he suffered a left hamstring injury in April, prompting the Tigers to sign Aderlin Rodriguez as a temporary replacement. Rodriguez's strong performance included 10 home runs in 31 games, but he declined a new contract with the Tigers in June, citing personal reasons.
Castro, who had modest stats before his injury, returned to form mid-season, hitting .409 with three homers in June, and .405 with seven homers in July. His strong finish to the regular season was marked by a .314/.359/.551 line and six home runs in the final 29 games.
In the postseason, Castro has maintained his momentum, leading the Tigers with five hits in their sweep of the LG Twins. In the series opener against the Lions, Castro drove in the first run with a two-out single and later scored on a double by Na Sung-bum. He extended the Tigers' lead with a two-run homer in the third inning and added another hit against reliever Bae Chan-seung.
Defensively, Castro has been reliable at first base, contributing to a crucial double play that thwarted a Lions rally. His all-round effort underscores the Tigers' decision to retain him, highlighting his value to the team in the postseason.
