Seoul: Hanwha Systems Co. has received certification from Lloyd's Register, a major naval certification organization in Britain, for a concept of its multipurpose combat ship powered by artificial intelligence (AI), the company said Thursday. The vessel, which has received an approval in principal (AIP) certification, is a 2,000-ton-class ship that embodies Hanwha Systems' smart battleship vision centered on its next-generation manned naval platform.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lloyd's Register is one of the world's three major maritime classification societies, alongside the American Bureau of Shipping and Norway's DNV. It examines whether manufacturing rules are aligned with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) construction standards.

Hanwha Systems' concept model integrates an AI-powered combat management system and a multifunction radar, using active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology. The vessel also features unmanned system solutions and stealth design to minimize detectability while reducing required crew numbers by roughly half compared with conventional manned ships, according to the company.
