Seoul: The presence of North Korean defectors is a familiar occurrence in South Korea, where numerous individuals born in the North, or whose parents originate from the North, have established new lives south of the border.
According to Yonhap News Agency, "Hana Korea," a Danish-Korean collaboration directed by Danish filmmaker Frederik Solberg and co-written with Sharon Sung-jae Choi, presents a unique perspective on the lives of North Korean defectors through a realistic and quiet approach. The film follows Hye-sun, portrayed by Kim Min-ha, a young woman who escapes her rural hometown in North Korea's Ryanggang province via China, leaving behind her family.
Hye-sun endures significant hardships as an undocumented resident in China before arriving in South Korea and entering Hanawon, a government-run resettlement center. Her primary focus remains collecting money demanded by an "uncle" for her mother's medication, illustrating her cautious and distant demeanor despite the opportunity for a new life.
Throughout her stay at Hanawon, Hye-sun forms friendships with fellow defectors, including Bomyi, a teen born to North Korean parents in China, and Sook-hee, who left her son in China. Their bond transcends age, providing support as they face post-resettlement challenges.
The film captures mundane moments that provoke thought, such as Hye-sun's interaction with a workplace colleague who offers an Instagram handle for contact, highlighting cultural and emotional gaps.
Kim Min-ha delivers a compelling performance, portraying Hye-sun's complex emotions through subtle expressions. The film's pacing and visual contrasts between Hye-sun's past and present life, along with an enigmatic soundtrack, emphasize the sense of unfamiliarity faced by defectors.
"Hana Korea," inspired by true stories and interviews, sheds light on the resilience of defectors. Last year, 224 North Korean defectors resettled in South Korea, with women comprising the majority. The film debuted at the Busan International Film Festival, securing the Flash Forward Audience Award.
