Gyeonggi Governor Choo Faces Criticism Over Firefighter Remarks

Suwon:Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae apologized once more on Monday for her recent comments that were criticized as disparaging firefighters by labeling them a "fiscal drain." Her earlier apology was met with public disapproval for its perceived lack of sincerity.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Choo expressed her regret during a parliamentary audit at the Gyeonggi provincial government office, acknowledging the hurt caused to firefighters. She pledged to prioritize their safety and working conditions, emphasizing her respect for their dedication.

The controversy began when Choo referred to the firefighting service as a significant "headache" and "fiscal drain" for local governments during a parliamentary session. Her initial apology came four days later, after the death of a firefighter in Bucheon, but was criticized for seeming insincere.

The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) has called for disciplinary measures against Choo by the ruling Democratic Party (DP). PPP Rep. Shin Dong-uk questioned Choo's ability to ensure the safety of Gyeonggi's residents, given her remarks about firefighters.

Within the DP, members also criticized Choo's apology. DP Rep. Park Jie-won suggested that Choo's apology was insufficient, while Rep. Kim Byung-joo stressed the importance of a sincere apology.

The DP leadership has committed to improving conditions for firefighters, with DP leader Kim Min-seok promising increased financial support and respect for their service.
