Seoul: The foreign ministry announced on Wednesday that an interagency meeting was held to evaluate the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and to deliberate on measures for ensuring the safety of South Korean ships and crew members in the region.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting was attended by officials from various governmental bodies, including the oceans and defense ministries, the Coast Guard, and diplomatic missions in the Middle East. The participants discussed the current circumstances and potential support measures for an evacuation if needed. They emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring of the safety and health conditions of the crew members and revisiting evacuation plans should the situation escalate.

A ministry official highlighted that the government is vigilantly observing the developments in the Middle East and activities of relevant nations. This follows a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, indicating that the United States no longer requires assistance from NATO allies, South Korea, Japan, or Australia for securing the Strait of Hormuz. The official stated that South Korea is exploring comprehensive strategies to safeguard its nationals and ensure the security of energy transport routes, while expressing hope for the rapid normalization of the global maritime supply chain.
