Government Waives Feasibility Study for AI-Powered Autonomous Ship Project

Seoul: The government announced its decision to bypass a preliminary feasibility study for an ambitious project to develop an AI-powered autonomous vessel. This move is aimed at fast-tracking the country's advancement in future maritime capabilities.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the exemption will accelerate the development of critical technologies necessary for creating a Level 4 autonomous vessel by 2032. A Level 4 vessel is fully autonomous, with the ability to make decisions and take actions independently, utilizing AI-based perception and control systems. Such vessels are anticipated to revolutionize the shipping and shipbuilding industries.

The government project focuses on creating unmanned navigation and automated marine engineering technologies for these fully autonomous ships. This effort is intended to precede the establishment of international standards by the International Maritime Organization, expected in 2032.

Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan emphasized Korea's potential to lead globally in the autonomous ship domain by leveraging its advanced shipbuilding and AI technologies.
