Seoul: The government has announced plans to relocate central administrative agencies from the Seoul metropolitan area to Sejong, starting in 2027. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook made the announcement on Thursday, outlining a strategic move aimed at bolstering balanced national development.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the government also intends to establish a second presidential office in Sejong by August 2029. This initiative is part of a broader effort to decentralize administrative functions and enhance the city's role as a key hub for governance. Additionally, the construction of a second National Assembly building in Sejong is slated for completion by 2030, reinforcing the city's significance in the governmental landscape.

Prime Minister Han elaborated that the relocation process would commence in the first half of 2027, prioritizing agencies with substantial relocation sizes and significant ripple effects. This phased approach underscores the government's commitment to a seamless transition and effective integration of administrative functions in Sejong.

Sejong is envisioned as a symbol and central axis of balanced national development, according to Han. By establishing a Sejong office of the president in 2029, the administration aims to cement Sejong's status as the epicenter of national governance, while simultaneously supporting the planned completion of the National Assembly hall by 2030.
