Seoul: A government task force announced on Thursday that the martial law bid by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in 2024 was identified as an "insurrection from above," aiming to involve multiple state agencies. This revelation comes after a thorough two-month investigation into the suspected involvement of various officials.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the task force was established in November to probe the involvement of military and public officials in the attempted martial law. Their findings indicated an effort to maintain martial law even after the National Assembly voted to lift it.
"We have confirmed that the Dec. 3 martial law bid declaration was an 'insurrection from above' that had an execution plan to mobilize all government agencies," stated Yoon Chang-ryeol, chief of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, during a press briefing.
The task force revealed that directives from the "highest level of authority" were given not only to the military and police but also to various central government agencies, thereby posing a significant threat to the constitutional order.
Yoon further explained, "We found that attempts were made to keep martial law in place even after the National Assembly voted to lift it at 1 a.m. on Dec. 4 and multiple actions to justify the declaration after it was lifted. This shows there was a premeditated plan for the martial law devised by someone."
In response, the government has called for disciplinary actions in 89 cases, primarily involving high-ranking officials. Additionally, 82 warnings or cautions have been issued, and 110 cases have been referred for further investigation.
