Seoul: The government has announced that the presidential election to choose the successor of former President Yoon Suk Yeol will take place on June 3, as confirmed by an official on Monday. This decision is expected to be finalized during an upcoming Cabinet meeting.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Acting President Han Duck-soo will solidify the election schedule during the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday. A senior government official emphasized the importance of the decision, especially concerning the designation of the election day as a temporary public holiday, which will receive approval during the meeting.
The urgency of the election stems from the Constitutional Court's removal of Yoon from office last Friday due to his unsuccessful attempt at declaring martial law. In accordance with the law, a presidential election must occur within 60 days of such a removal. This mirrors the situation in 2017 when former President Park Geun-hye was ousted on March 10, and an early election was subsequently held 60 days later, on May 9.
In preparation for the upcoming election, the National Election Commission commenced early candidate registration shortly after the court's dismissal of Yoon. Should the schedule be confirmed, candidates will have until May 11 to register, with the official campaign period beginning on May 12.
Additionally, the law stipulates that any public servant intending to run for president must resign from their position at least 30 days before the election, setting May 4 as the resignation deadline. The newly elected president will immediately assume office after the election results are announced, bypassing the need for a transition team.
