Government Finalizes Decision to Abolish Prosecution’s Right to Supplementary Investigations

Seoul: The government has reached a final conclusion that the prosecution should not be allowed the right to supplementary investigations, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok announced Thursday. This decision marks a significant step in the administration's prosecution reform agenda.

According to Yonhap News Agency, whether to allow the prosecution to conduct supplementary investigations or to strip it of all its investigative power has been a contentious issue. The ruling Democratic Party has been advocating for a complete removal of these rights, citing the need for reform, while the opposition has expressed concerns about potential negative consequences of such a move.

Prime Minister Kim emphasized that the core principle of the Lee Jae Myung administration's prosecution reform is the separation of investigation and indictment. "Scrapping the prosecution's supplementary investigative right has been finalized as the government's basic position," he stated, signaling a decisive stance in the ongoing debate.

Kim further clarified that the government will not introduce a new legislative bill on this matter. Instead, he noted, "The government will respect the National Assembly's discussions and decision," indicating a collaborative approach to the legislative process.
