Government Commits to ‘Unlimited Liquidity’ to Support Financial Stability Amid Martial Law Declaration.

Seoul: The government has announced its readiness to inject "unlimited liquidity" into the nation's financial markets to ensure stability, following the surprise declaration of emergency martial law. This announcement was made by the finance ministry on Wednesday, shortly after the unexpected political development led to market volatility. According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision came after an emergency meeting convened by economy-related ministers, chaired by Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok. The announcement aims to reassure investors and market participants after the South Korean won plunged to a multiyear low, triggered by President Yoon Suk Yeol's late Tuesday declaration of emergency martial law. In a statement, the ministry emphasized its commitment to providing unlimited liquidity until the stabilization of stock, bond, short-term funding, and foreign currency markets is achieved. It also assured that financial, foreign exchange, and stock markets would continue to operate normally, despite the c urrent uncertainties. The South Korean won experienced significant depreciation, falling to 1,442 per dollar during offshore trading hours. This marked its lowest point since October 25, 2022, when it was valued at 1,444.20 against the U.S. dollar. However, the currency showed some recovery, closing at 1,415.8 won. Furthermore, the financial turmoil was reflected in the KOSPI 200 overnight futures index, which suffered considerable losses. The index dropped more than 5 percent during the trading session before closing with a 1.8 percent decline.
