Government Announces Expanded Heating Bill Support for Vulnerable Populations

Seoul: The government has unveiled a comprehensive package of measures aimed at assisting vulnerable groups in managing the surge in heating and energy costs during the winter season. This announcement comes as part of efforts to address public concerns over increasing heating expenses.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the measures were introduced during a meeting of economy-related ministers, led by Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol. The plan includes providing substantial discounts on utility bills for vulnerable populations, such as individuals with disabilities, national merit recipients, and basic livelihood security beneficiaries. These groups will receive reductions of up to 16,000 won (approximately US$11.10) per month on electricity bills and up to 148,000 won per month on city gas bills through March.

Moreover, around 200,000 households that qualify for energy vouchers and use kerosene or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will benefit from an additional 147,000 won on average, bringing the total support to 514,000 won per household. The government is also set to distribute coal briquette vouchers valued at 472,000 won per household for those relying on briquette boilers. Furthermore, it plans to aid in the replacement of outdated heating facilities for 3,000 households.

South Korea's heavy reliance on energy imports makes it susceptible to external price fluctuations, often resulting in increased energy costs. The government's proactive measures aim to mitigate these impacts for the most vulnerable sections of the population.
