Seoul: The gender equality ministry announced its intention to secure a budget exceeding 2 trillion won (US$1.46 billion) for the upcoming fiscal year, aiming to provide 1 million won in cash to each couple getting married.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministry has proposed a 2.1 trillion won budget for the next year, marking a 5.5 percent increase from the current year, as part of the government's comprehensive 2027 budget plan. Within this budget, the ministry intends to allocate 166.3 billion won for a cash support program targeting newlyweds. This initiative is set to replace an existing marriage tax credit program, which currently offers benefits up to 1 million won per couple and is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2026.

The government's strategy to boost marriage rates is a response to the country's persistently low birthrate. Notably, the number of marriages reached 240,300 in 2025, the highest in seven years, signaling a potential positive trend.

In addition to supporting marriages, the ministry aims to allocate a total of 1.5 trillion won for family-related projects in 2027, reflecting a 7.5 percent increase from this year. For gender-related initiatives, the ministry plans to increase spending by 32.9 percent, dedicating 53 billion won.

The ministry also revealed plans to expand a pilot program providing free sanitary pads at public facilities to a nationwide initiative next year, further supporting its commitment to gender equality and public health.
