Seoul: Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Gen. Jin Yong-sung has initiated a comprehensive replacement of generals at the top military leadership, marking a significant overhaul in response to last year's martial law turmoil. This decision is part of a broader personnel reform strategy aimed at reshaping the military's leadership structure.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Gen. Jin has mandated the replacement of all generals within the JCS, as well as lieutenant colonels and colonels who have held positions within the organization for two years or more. This sweeping change underscores the military's commitment to reform in the aftermath of the martial law attempt.
A military official highlighted that this measure is integral to the personnel reform following the martial law incident. Under this directive, approximately 40 generals currently serving in the JCS are anticipated to be reassigned to various military branches or the defense ministry.
In a related development, all seven four-star generals who were in office during the brief imposition of martial law by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in December last year were discharged in September. This action reflects the ongoing efforts to address the consequences of the martial law episode and restore stability within the military leadership.
