Firefighters Successfully Extinguish Blaze at Historic Joseon-Era Garden in Seoul

Seoul: A fire at a wooden building within a culturally significant garden in northern Seoul was extinguished after a four-hour battle, local firefighters reported on Monday. The blaze broke out at a Korean-style structure located in the garden in Seongbuk-dong at 12:45 p.m. Firefighters promptly responded to reports of the fire, deploying personnel and equipment to the site, although the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the fire was fully contained by approximately 5:00 p.m. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported in connection with the incident. The building, which caught fire, was a relatively newer addition, having been constructed in the 1950s. Firefighters are currently in the process of dismantling the roof as smoke continues to emanate from the upper roof tiles.

The fire caused significant damage to the pillars of the building, as confirmed by both the firefighters and the Korea Heritage Service. The garden, once known as Seongnagwon, is a notable example of a garden from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It was recognized as one of South Korea's scenic sites in 2020, reflecting its historical and cultural importance.
