Seoul:FC Seoul is on the brink of capturing its first top-tier South Korean football league title in ten years, with the possibility of celebrating as early as Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, FC Seoul currently leads the K League 1 standings with 65 points, achieved through 20 wins, five draws, and six losses. Their nearest rival, Ulsan Hyundai FC, trails with 47 points. With both teams having seven matches remaining, FC Seoul will secure the championship if Ulsan fails to win on Saturday and if FC Seoul triumphs on Sunday.
Ulsan Hyundai FC is set to compete against Bucheon FC 1995 on Saturday at 430 p.m. Even a draw would only advance them to 48 points. Should FC Seoul defeat Gimcheon Sangmu FC on the following day, their total would rise to 68 points. This outcome would create an unbridgeable 20-point gap with only six matches left, allowing FC Seoul to match the 2018 Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors' record for the fastest title clinch under the current league format.
FC Seoul has been a formidable force this season, avoiding consecutive losses and leading the league in goals scored with 58, surpassing Ulsan by 10. They have also conceded the fewest goals, with 26, two fewer than Gangwon FC. Polish striker Patryk Klimala has been instrumental, scoring 14 goals, just one short of Ulsan's Yago Cariello. Winger Jeong Seung-won has added eight goals and six assists.
Klimala's efforts were recognized when he was named the K League 1 Player of the Month for September. He won with 38.60 voting points in a poll including the league's technical study group, K League fans, and EA Sports FC Online players. Klimala netted three goals in four matches during the month and was named Player of the Matchweek on September 15 after scoring twice in a victory against Jeonbuk.
Goalkeeper Gu Sung-yun has also been pivotal, contributing to 13 clean sheets, the second-most in the league behind Gangwon FC's 14. Head coach Kim Gi-dong, who has faced criticism from fans in the past, is now steering FC Seoul toward a long-awaited championship since his appointment before the 2024 season. The club's performance is a significant turnaround from previous seasons, where they finished fourth and sixth under Kim's leadership.
