Daejeon: An explosion and fire at a Hanwha Aerospace plant in Daejeon, south of Seoul, claimed the lives of five workers, with two others sustaining injuries. The incident occurred during cleaning operations involving explosive materials, although the exact cause remains undetermined.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this tragic event follows closely on the heels of another disaster, where an overpass collapse in Seosomun led to the deaths of three individuals. These incidents have sparked discussions about the prioritization of safety measures, especially as local elections approach.

President Lee Jae Myung has called for comprehensive rescue and recovery efforts and has mandated a thorough investigation into the explosion. Hanwha Aerospace, a leading defense company, operates the Daejeon plant, which is a government-designated security facility engaged in developing core engines for various weapon systems. Despite its reputation, the company has faced a series of fatal accidents, with similar incidents occurring in 2018 and 2019.

The Federation of Korean Trade Unions highlighted the recurring nature of such accidents at the plant. Hanwha Aerospace had previously invested in improving safety processes, yet the latest incident suggests that some risks may have been underestimated. Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon emphasized the importance of treating all tasks as high-risk, particularly in facilities that handle weapon production.

The victims of the explosion included two temporary workers in their 20s and three regular workers aged between 30 and 50. Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn expressed condolences and committed to addressing the aftermath of the accident. He mentioned the establishment of a task force to work alongside authorities in managing the situation.
