Seoul: A fire erupted on a Panama-flagged vessel operated by a major South Korean shipping company, HMM Co., while it was stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, as confirmed by the foreign ministry. The incident took place at around 8:40 p.m. near the United Arab Emirates within the strait.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the vessel experienced an explosion followed by a fire while anchored. Onboard the vessel were 24 crew members, including six South Korean nationals and 18 foreign nationals, with no casualties reported thus far. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion and fire, as well as assessing the extent of the damage.
In a statement, the ministry emphasized its commitment to working closely with relevant countries to ensure the safety of South Korean vessels and crew members in the strategic waterway.
