Seoul: Former President Yoon Suk Yeol has submitted a request for a legal review of his arrest, initiating a process to challenge his detention following his attempt to enforce martial law. This filing marks a significant step by Yoon’s legal team to argue against what they claim is an “illegal” and “unjust” arrest, both in substance and procedure, as stated by his lawyers on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the petition was lodged with the Seoul Central District Court, which is mandated by law to evaluate the suspect’s situation and examine the evidence within 48 hours. This rapid assessment will determine whether the arrest should be upheld. The outcome could potentially lead to Yoon’s release from the Seoul Detention Center, where he has been detained since a court warrant was issued last Thursday concerning five primary charges linked to his martial law initiative.
Yoon previously pursued a similar course of action in January after his initial arrest. At that time, the court validated his detention; however, a subsequent appeal for release was successful, leading to his freedom in March.
