Ex-Justice Minister Park Sung-jae Faces Court Over Martial Law Allegations

Seoul: Former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae attended a court hearing Tuesday regarding the issuance of an arrest warrant over his alleged involvement in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempted imposition of martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Park has been accused by a special counsel team of playing a significant role in an insurrection and misuse of power related to the martial law attempt in December. The Seoul Central District Court is anticipated to make a decision following the hearing, potentially as soon as later in the day, on whether to issue the arrest warrant requested by special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team.

Park was reportedly one of the initial contacts made by Yoon on December 3, where plans to impose martial law were discussed. Investigators allege that Park facilitated the effort by ordering potential dispatch of a prosecutor to a joint investigation headquarters under the now-defunct martial law command. He is also suspected of directing the Korea Immigration Service to prepare for travel bans on individuals arrested under martial law and instructing the Korea Correctional Service to arrange incarceration space for politicians and others.

Park's defense has refuted the allegations, arguing that the instructions were standard preparations for potential situations. "I will explain myself fully in court," Park stated to reporters as he arrived for the hearing.
