Seoul: Former Democratic Party (DP) lawmaker Hong Ik-pyo has been appointed as the new secretary for political affairs by President Lee Jae Myung, as announced by Cheong Wa Dae on Sunday. Hong is set to officially begin his role on Tuesday, succeeding Woo Sang-ho, according to Lee Kyu-youn, the presidential secretary for public relations and communication, during a press briefing.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hong Ik-pyo, who has served three terms as a lawmaker, was previously the floor leader of the DP, working closely with Lee during his tenure as the party leader. Hong is recognized for his approach to politics, which emphasizes tolerance and cooperation, aiming to resolve conflicts through compromise and agreement.
The appointment follows Woo Sang-ho's decision to resign, reportedly to pursue a candidacy for the governorship of Gangwon Province in the upcoming local elections scheduled for June. This move has sparked speculation on whether other senior presidential officials might also step down, given the rule requiring civil servants intending to run in elections to resign 90 days before the election date.
In response to his appointment, Hong has committed to supporting President Lee's vision of national unity. He pledged to engage actively with both the public and the political community to mitigate social conflicts and divisions. On his Facebook page, Hong expressed his dedication to serving as a conduit between the president and the people, as well as Cheong Wa Dae and the political sphere, promising to transparently communicate diverse perspectives and make concerted efforts towards national cohesion.
