Seoul: Emart Inc., South Korea's largest discount retailer, announced a significant reduction in its fourth-quarter net loss, attributed to an improved performance in its core retail operations. Net loss for the three months ending in December was reported at 116.3 billion won (US$79.9 million), a considerable improvement from 596.3 billion won during the same period in 2024, as disclosed in a regulatory filing by the company.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Emart's operating loss decreased to 9.9 billion won from 77.1 billion won year-on-year, while sales increased by 0.9 percent to 7.31 trillion won. A company spokesperson highlighted that cost reductions were primarily achieved through consolidated purchasing efforts across Emart, its warehouse chain Emart Traders, and Everyday supermarkets. Furthermore, Emart Traders played a role in earnings growth by upgrading facilities and expanding their range of competitively priced products.
The quarterly results were further bolstered by higher equity gains from affiliates, such as Shinsegae Property and Josun Hotels and Resorts. Emart also reported a swing to a net profit of 246.3 billion won for the full year of 2025, contrasting with a net loss of 573.4 billion won in the previous year. Operating profit for the year rose to 322.5 billion won from 47.1 billion won, although sales slightly decreased by 0.2 percent to 28.97 trillion won from the previous 29 trillion won.
Looking ahead, the company has set a sales target of 29.3 trillion won for 2026, aiming to achieve this by enhancing both online and offline sales channels to ensure sustainable growth and profitability.
