Eagles Ace Moon Dong-ju to Undergo Shoulder Surgery

Daejeon: The Hanwha Eagles announced that their starting pitcher Moon Dong-ju will undergo surgery on his ailing right shoulder. Moon, who has been facing shoulder issues, was diagnosed with damage to his labrum after tests at two clinics over the past two days.

According to Yonhap News Agency, doctors at both clinics recommended surgery for Moon. The Eagles plan to seek a second opinion from the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles before scheduling the operation. The Eagles have indicated that the timeline for Moon's return will become clearer after consulting with the experts in Los Angeles. Typically, pitchers undergoing labrum surgery are expected to miss about a year of action.

Moon removed himself from his latest start against the Samsung Lions after experiencing discomfort in the first inning, following a fastball clocked at 154 kilometers per hour. Despite being named the 2023 Rookie of the Year, Moon has a 1-1 record with a 5.18 ERA in six outings this season.

Known as one of the hardest throwers in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), Moon has shown potential for dominance but has been hampered by health issues. The 22-year-old has previously dealt with shoulder problems over the past two seasons and missed the World Baseball Classic in March due to shoulder discomfort.

The Hanwha Eagles are currently facing a challenging time with three starting pitchers, including Moon, sidelined. Owen White is out with a hamstring injury, and Wilkel Hernandez is nursing an elbow issue. Jack Cushing, brought in as a temporary replacement for White, has been pitching in relief.
