Driver Found in Cardiac Arrest as Retaining Wall Collapse Traps Vehicle

Osan: One driver was found in cardiac arrest after his car became trapped beneath a collapsed retaining wall in Osan amid heavy rainfall, as reported by authorities. The incident occurred at the Gajang intersection in Gyeonggi Province, located 52 kilometers south of Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the 10-meter-high retaining wall of an overpass collapsed onto the road at around 7:04 p.m. The collapse buried one vehicle under the debris, as confirmed by the Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters. Rescue teams worked for hours to reach the driver, a man in his 40s, who was found under the debris in cardiac arrest.

The vehicle was significantly damaged, crushed and pinned beneath the concrete structure. At the time of the collapse, heavy rain was reported not only in Osan but also in Seoul and surrounding areas. Authorities have yet to confirm if the rainfall directly caused the collapse, as investigations into the cause are ongoing.

Initially, there was a belief that two vehicles were buried under the debris. However, dashcam footage from a vehicle that stopped just before the collapse site indicated that only one vehicle was affected. Following the collapse, traffic at the intersection was entirely restricted to facilitate rescue operations and ensure safety.
