Seoul: The floor leader of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) stated that any decision to send South Korea's warships to the Strait of Hormuz must obtain parliamentary approval. This announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump's call for nations to dispatch ships to maintain the safety of the critical oil shipping route in the Gulf region.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Song Eon-seog of the PPP emphasized the necessity of National Assembly approval for such a decision, noting the significant implications of deploying military forces to an area with a high potential for combat engagement. Song's remarks were made during the party's supreme council meeting, highlighting that sending the Cheonghae naval unit, which is currently involved in anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, to the Strait of Hormuz would alter its initial mission, thereby requiring legislative consent.

The issue arises as President Trump urged South Korea and other nations impacted by Iran's actions to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains "open and safe," amidst increasing concerns regarding potential disruptions to maritime traffic in the area. In response, Cheong Wa Dae announced on Sunday that it would carefully consider its approach to Trump's request, signaling ongoing deliberations on the matter.
