The nature of RBIs in baseball is such that you can't pile up big numbers without having teammates getting on base in front of you, unless you're hitting solo home runs all the time.
Jason Martin of the NC Dinos has had more than his share of chances to hit with runners on during the first round in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason. And the American outfielder helped the Dinos complete a three-game sweep of the SSG Landers by knocking in three runs in a 7-6 win Wednesday night.
All three of them came in one swing of the bat, as Martin blasted a three-run homer against reliever Noh Kyung-eun, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 lead at Changwon NC Park in the southeastern city.
"We got a runner on, and I was just looking for a certain pitch in the certain location," Martin said. "He threw it right there, and I was able to put a good swing on it and hit a home run."
Martin led the Dinos with five RBIs in this series, continuing the theme from the regular season. In his first KBO campaign, Martin topped his club with 90 RBIs, the fourth-highest total in the league.
Batting mostly in the cleanup spot behind three of the league's best contact hitters - Son Ah-seop, Park Min-woo and Park Kun-woo - also helped.
"I feel like throughout the whole year, just me being able to get RBIs is because of our one, two three hitters," Martin said of the trio. "They do a really good job getting on base, and I have a lot of situations to be able to drive them in."
Son had a .400 on-base percentage this series, while Park Min-woo got on base at a .571 clip and Park Kun-woo did so at a rate of .462.
Martin said he also thanked his teammates for helping him find his footing over the course of his first season in the new country.
"I felt like I just got more and more comfortable, and it's been great having the teammates, coaches and staff around, being able to help me with that," he said. "I thank them tremendously, and I'm just feeling a lot better, the more time I stay here."
Martin had 17 home runs in 118 games this regular season but finished with just three over his final 35 games. He said he may be just hitting his stride again.
"I feel like throughout the long season, there's a lot of ups and downs, and you just try your best to stay positive," he said. "And I've been able to come around as of late, and hopefully, I continue to do so in the playoffs."
