Seoul: The defense ministry announced plans to establish a special investigation unit to examine allegations related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law attempt last December. This development follows the impending conclusion of a special counsel team's investigation this week.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision arises as special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team, which has been probing insurrection and treason charges linked to the martial law imposition, is set to conclude its mandate on Sunday. The newly formed unit, consisting of military police and prosecutors, aims to address unresolved allegations and explore new suspicions that emerged during the investigation.

The investigation is set to focus on allegations that the Drone Operations Command deployed drones over Pyongyang during Yoon's presidency. This action was allegedly intended to provoke North Korea and justify the imposition of martial law on December 3. Additionally, there are suspicions that a military propaganda unit clandestinely dispatched anti-Pyongyang leaflets to North Korea for similar reasons.
