Defense Chief Engages with U.S. Lawmakers on Alliance Strengthening

Seoul: Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back on Thursday held talks with a delegation of U.S. Senate lawmakers visiting South Korea and discussed ways to improve the Seoul-Washington alliance, the defense ministry said.

According to Yonhap News Agency, in the meeting, Ahn requested bipartisan congressional support for the alliance to advance in a future-oriented and mutually beneficial manner, mentioning South Korea's bid to build a nuclear-powered submarine. Ahn highlighted how cooperation in shipbuilding, maintenance, repair, and operations could significantly contribute to the U.S. efforts to revitalize its shipbuilding industry and enhance maritime capabilities.

The U.S. delegation assured bipartisan support for the 70-year alliance, acknowledging its success as one of the most effective partnerships globally. Attending the meeting were Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Jacklyn Rosen, Thomas Tillis, and John Curtis.
