Changwon: Prosecutors have sought the death penalty for a YouTuber accused of assaulting her teenage daughter resulting in death, a court said Friday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Changwon District Court's Jinju branch revealed that prosecutors made the sentencing request on Thursday after indicting the mother in her 40s, who is also a singer, on charges that include murder. The tragic incident reportedly took place last September in the southern county of Namhae.
The woman is accused of beating her daughter with a wooden stick and pouring boiling water over her head at the victim's residence. After the assault, she allegedly left her daughter to die in a car. The prosecution argued that the defendant was motivated by the belief that her daughter had caused her social embarrassment, leading to the violent attack.
The prosecution emphasized the severe nature of the crime and highlighted the defendant's past record of domestic violence as a significant factor in their decision to seek the death penalty. They stressed the necessity for the defendant's permanent isolation from society to prevent further offenses.
The defense team, however, disputed the charges, asserting that the defendant had no intention of killing her daughter. As the legal proceedings continue, the case has garnered significant public attention due to the involvement of a social media personality.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place on October 8, where the court will determine the fate of the accused mother.
