Damien Hirst Exhibition at MMCA Attracts Over Half a Million Visitors

Seoul: An exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) showcasing the works of British artist Damien Hirst has attracted more than 540,000 visitors, the museum announced on Monday. The exhibition, titled "Damien Hirst: Nothing is True But Everything Is Possible," ran at the Seoul branch of the museum from March 20 to June 28, drawing a total of 541,889 attendees and averaging 5,645 visitors daily.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this was the artist's first solo show in Asia, featuring around 50 pieces from his 40-year career. Among the highlights were "For the Love of God," a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with diamonds, and the "Natural History" series, which preserves real animals in tanks of formaldehyde.

The exhibition attracted a diverse age group, with visitors in their 20s and 30s making up 62 percent. Notably, teen visitors reached a record 12 percent, nearly doubling the average portion of teen visitors at previous MMCA exhibitions. Foreign attendees constituted 6.5 percent of the total visitor count, and the museum observed a 3.3-fold increase in new memberships during the exhibition period.

The MMCA expressed that it is "encouraging" to see the exhibition providing the general public access to Hirst's works. The museum plans to continue its efforts to host exhibitions featuring contemporary masters from South Korea and abroad.
