Guadalajara: Two of South Korea's group stage opponents at the upcoming FIFA World Cup secured victories in their final friendly matches. Czechia emerged victorious with a 3-1 win against Guatemala at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. Patrik Schick, Tomas Chory, and Denis Visinsky were the goal scorers for Czechia, who are currently ranked 41st in the FIFA rankings, 16 spots below South Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Schick opened the scoring for Czechia with a counter break in the 11th minute. While Guatemala's William Fajardo equalized in the 40th minute, Chory's header in the 72nd minute gave Czechia the lead, which was further solidified by Visinsky's goal in the 79th minute. Czechia had previously defeated Kosovo 2-1, showcasing their form ahead of the World Cup.
In their own preparations, South Korea secured wins in their final two friendlies, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 and overcoming El Salvador 1-0. South Korea is set to face Czechia next Thursday at Estadio Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico.
On the same day, Mexico, co-hosting the tournament and ranked 15th, triumphed over Serbia with a 5-1 victory at Estadio Nemesio Diez Riega in Toluca, Mexico. After a narrow 1-0 victory over Australia, Mexico benefited from two own goals by Serbia, alongside goals from Johan Vasquez, Raul Jimenez, and Luis Chavez. Petar Stanic scored Serbia's only goal.
South Korea is scheduled to play against Mexico on June 18 at Estadio Guadalajara. Meanwhile, South Africa, another team in Group A, played a goalless draw against Nicaragua in their final friendly. South Korea will meet South Africa on June 24 at Estadio Monterrey in Monterrey.
