Seoul: A massive blaze at a Coupang Corp. warehouse was fully extinguished Wednesday, about 109 hours after it broke out, firefighting authorities said. The Incheon Fire Headquarters confirmed that they managed to put out the fire at the retail giant's logistics center in Seongnam-dong, Incheon, just west of Seoul, at 8:35 p.m.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the fire took 109 hours and 40 minutes to be fully extinguished after it initially erupted on Saturday. The incident resulted in injuries to two firefighters and necessitated the evacuation of hundreds of nearby residents. This fire marks the second-longest warehouse fire in South Korea's recent history, following a 2021 blaze at another Coupang distribution center in Icheon, which lasted about 130 hours.

Upon the outbreak of the fire, authorities issued a national order that mobilized hundreds of firefighters and necessary equipment to contain the blaze. However, attempts to control the fire were hindered by the building's complex layout and the large quantities of flammable materials stored inside.

Progress in firefighting efforts was noted on Monday, aided by rainfall, which allowed authorities to bring the fire under initial control approximately 60 hours after it began. Over 120 people, including warehouse workers, evacuated the building immediately following the fire's outbreak. More than 200 residents also sought refuge in nearby schools after a local government evacuation order was issued due to concerns about the potential collapse of the structure.

The warehouse, which has eight floors above ground, spans a gross floor area of 299,000 square meters. Authorities have announced plans to form an investigation team to ascertain the cause of the fire and evaluate the extent of the damage.
