Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Visits Seoul Amid Tensions on Korean Peninsula

Seoul: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was set to arrive in South Korea on Wednesday, marking an important diplomatic engagement shortly after President Lee Jae Myung proposed multiparty talks to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Wang Yi will commence his two-day visit with one-on-one discussions with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun. The agenda will encompass various bilateral issues, the Korean Peninsula situation, and other regional and international matters. These discussions will be followed by a banquet, as stated by Seoul's foreign ministry.

Ministry spokesperson Park Doo-soon emphasized that the talks are anticipated to review achievements in restoring South Korea-China relations and to prepare for upcoming high-level exchanges, particularly ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November in Shenzhen, China.

On the second day of his visit, Wang is scheduled to meet President Lee at Cheong Wa Dae, where they will discuss Seoul-Beijing relations and regional security. Additionally, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac will host a separate meeting and luncheon with Wang to delve into the Korean Peninsula's security situation and other mutual interests.

Wang's visit follows President Lee's recent proposal for multiparty dialogue aimed at formally ending the Korean War, as articulated in his Liberation Day speech. This initiative aligns with Lee's vision to foster peaceful coexistence with North Korea and to prevent conflicts. The Korean War concluded with an armistice, leaving the Koreas technically at war.

The president's speech has reinforced his commitment to improving inter-Korean relations and positioning Seoul as a mediator in rekindling dialogue between North Korea and the United States. Despite these efforts, North Korea has remained largely unresponsive since Lee assumed office in June 2025.

A foreign ministry official highlighted that the Cho-Wang meeting is expected to address President Lee's vision for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, with the potential inclusion of the proposed multiparty dialogue on the agenda.

Additionally, discussions are likely to cover expanding cooperation and ties in anticipation of the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Seoul and Beijing next year. Wang's last visit to Seoul was in September 2021, with his previous meeting with Cho occurring in Beijing in September.
